Presidents Day
I’m writing from the drivers seat of our SUV as I wait for mom to pick up some tiles from the roofing supply store. It’s Presidents’ Day. I left the house under the impression that we were driving up to Santa Barbara to bike/skate along the beach but mom surprise navigated me to this store so here I am.
Gotta love them surprise errands… I should have brought a book.
This past week has been a transition period. I started off with the singular goal of completing my binge of Black Clover. I remember back in college when my ex girlfriend asked me if I watched anime and I proudly answered “I’m done with that stuff baby never touching it again.” Oh what a lie that was.
I’d started Black Clover after finishing my month long songwriting session back in January and in all fairness the show was reaaaaaally good. Like a lot of animes it centers around a main character that pushes past his limits with unfaltering determination and the help of his friends. A pretty over done concept but some parts of the show were really inspiring. I regularly found myself wanting to push past my limits like all the characters in the show. I’d recommend watching from episode 30 and beyond.
As much as I enjoyed it the binge took a lot out of me. I needed a change. I craved a change. So I’m back on my media purge.
I feel pretty good this time around. I enter this purge with the realization that some of the most fruitful / rewarding times of my life coincided with a media purge. You take out all unnecessary noise from you’re life and face a wall of silence. Since you can’t live vicariously through TV anymore you fill that void with progressions in your real life. You exercise more, date more, aim for higher goals and life becomes great again. You become a better listener too. You value your friendships more. Fewer things to distract you now.
At least that’s how my current theory goes.
I think it’ll stick this time around. I’m going all in. Installed a chrome plugin to block every little distraction—all those unnecessary, seemingly negligible visits to random websites really add up. I’ve started keeping my phone charged outside my room so I don’t reach for it first thing in the morning. I’m leaving my iPad behind so I’m not tempted to watch YouTube late into the night worsening my already poor sleep schedule. When I have writing / producing sessions I leave my iPhone outside the room and rely on my watch for voice memos when necessary. I’ve started writing a lot more in my daily handwritten journal so I let out thoughts/ideas instead of letting them bounce around indefinitely.
I’m ALL IN BABY.
edit: about an hour later we ended up walking down Main Street in Santa Barbara and got these delicious tacos from Yona Redz.
