New Habits / LA Thoughts

Writing from Alchemist Coffee Project. It’s a bit of a slow day at work. More or less finished the work I was supposed to do so I’m just chilling at the moment.

I’ve been in Oxnard / LA for the past week since coming back from Mexico City. Things have been good. Usually I’m pretty bored when I’m in Oxnard but it hasn’t been that bad this time around.

I’ve set up a new slate of habits after continuing to re-read Atomic Habits. Sticking with three to begin the year

  1. Read

  2. Walk 45 min or Exercise

  3. Open up DAW and listen through project to the end

Starting with relatively easy things so I can get into the habits quickly without much resistance. So far so good. The easiness of it actually does make it easy to get into the habit and once I’m there I stay there. Momentum works.

I’m in a bit of a transition period. Heading back to NYC this Saturday to clear out my sublet apartment and say hi / bye to some friends. Next few months I’ll be coming back to LA, probably subletting a place in 1-2 neighborhoods and trying out life here.

I’m excited for what’s to come. Not only moving to LA, but also Mom and Dad moving into their BRAND NEW HOUSE! Dad’s long held American Dream of owning a brand new house and a nice car is finally coming to fruition.

As I sit here in sunny LA, I do feel ready to say goodbye to NYC. For a couple months here and there, I felt slightly like a ghoul haunting a place that had already moved on past him. Maybe that’s a bit melodramatic. But it felt like my time in NYC had come to a close and the city was moving past me.

I’m sure part of that was self inflicted. Stopping / slowing down on all the activities I’d done in the city (improv, making music, hosting, volleyball) led to a sense that my time there was coming to a close. Either way, I’m excited for LA.

There’s a lot to figure out. Where to live first of all. Whether I’ll keep bouncing back and forth from Mom and Dad’s house to Harry’s apartment or get a place of my own. The car situation. Activities I’ll want to do. Where I’ll want to live. How I’ll make new friends / how I’ll get back in touch with the ones I already have. But that will all come in time. It’s easier thinking about all that stuff now that I’m actually in LA.

This past week was very chill. Spent most of it working from Oxnard. Went to Valencia a couple times to check out the new house Mom and Dad are buying.

Notably, biked from Culver City to Marina Del Rey. Tony and I rode on city bikes and it roughly took 90 minutes to get there. Beautiful ride towards the end where the path had beautiful views of the ocean. It was also nice in that there were no cars one we got on the path.

We got to Marina del Rey and discovered that the trail went on for 22 more miles! We were a bit tired and unprepared for that long of a ride but I definitely want to do it one day.

After the ride we hung out in Marina del Rey for a bit and then ubered back to Culver City. Got a delicious burger at Father’s Office. Would definitely go back.
